5 Tips When Choosing Curtains
Here we have 5 simple tips to help you to select the right curtains for you and your home. If you have any further questions or need some additional advice, please contact us. Alternatively, please feel free to ask a question in the comments below.
Think About the Purpose of the Curtains in the Room
Try to start by considering the purpose of your new curtains, is it for privacy, warmth, darkness, or just to add some colour, texture or pattern? Different spaces have different purposes, so this may be something that you would like to think about. As an example, if you need curtains that provide darkness, you will need curtains with a blackout lining. A blackout lining is perfect for a bedroom.
Consider the Colours, Patterns and Style
As curtains are a feature and take up quite a bit of visible space within the room, always consider colours, pattern and style. Curtains can have a huge impact on the look and design of a room. Picking the right colour, pattern and style is essential when placing them in your room. The colour and pattern of the fabric should ideally complement the rest of the room, like the wall colour, sofa, cushions, flooring, etc. This is something that we can help you with. We have a huge amount of different fabrics to choose from and are happy to bring them to show you. Also, curtains have different style curtain headings to choose from. Different headings lend themselves better to modern homes and others lend themselves to more traditional homes, but some work with either.
Always Ensure the Curtains are a Good Size
The curtains that you choose, the fabric should be double the width of your window to sit properly, for a beautiful aesthetic and for the correct window coverage. I would recommend full length curtains where possible that skim the floor. And in homes with taller ceilings and windows, you can consider puddling at the bottom for an additionally luxurious look. Any look can be achieved with bespoke handmade curtains.
Think About the Right Fabrics for your Needs
There are so many different types of fabric to choose from. Cotton is easily cleaned and very versatile. Velvet is very luxurious in both look and feel, but can be very heavy. Voiles and sheer curtains are very light and flowy, but do not offer much privacy. Wool fabrics hold fringes, trims and other embellishments really well, but again can be very heavy. Fabric types are down to personal preference.
Never Forget the Hardware
The curtain poles and finials must complement the fabric, and ideally the other hardware within the interior. For voiles and sheer curtains, I would recommend quite a dainty curtain pole. Whereas with a heavier fabric like velvet, consider a thicker and more decorative pole if you would like the more luxury look. Again, it to consider whether you are going for a more modern or more traditional interior as this can influence your choice of hardware. If you would like to see or order curtain poles or other curtain hardware, we are happy to help and have beautiful ranges to choose from.
